Itinerary
Also interested in the belugas are the polar bears, here to wile away the summer and provide us with fantastic viewing opportunities in the process. You’ll have the chance to see a whole host of other wildlife on this trip as well—including caribou, fox (red and Arctic), wolves, moose and birds galore (such species as ptarmigan, Smith’s Longspur, Ross’ and Bonaparte gulls, jaegers, etc).
ITINERARY
Wildlife Viewing in Northern Canada
Day 1
Upon arrival in Winnipeg, you will transfer to a local commercial airline for your flight to Churchill. There, you will be escorted to your hotel before dinner in a local restaurant. Accommodations are at the Aurora Inn, a moderate hotel.
Day 2
Your adventure begins with a breathtaking aerial tour of the winding Hudson Bay coast en route to the lodge. Be prepared to see huge pods of whales, countless birds, caribou and, of course, the magnificent polar bears. The Seal River Estuary is a summer favourite for these goliaths and they are regularly seen swimming or basking near the water’s edge. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch prior to your first guided walk on the tundra. Accommodations are at Seal River Heritage Lodge.
Days 3, 4, 5 & 6
Each morning after breakfast, you’ll head out with an expert guide to enjoy one of the following activities: marine tours to view beluga whales, seals, seabirds, and polar bears; trekking/walking tours to experience the sheer vastness of the Arctic’s flora and fauna—view fox dens, caribou, birds and more; whale swim (the ultimate plunge!) and exploration by Zodiac; wildlife photography workshops; ocean paddles by kayak or canoe; aurora watching—the greatest light show on earth; bird watching to spot the 150 species that visit this area; and travelling the coast in the lodge’s custom-made Tundra Tracker. Each evening, enjoy informative lectures, beautiful slide presentations, and conversation around the fire. Accommodations are at Seal River Heritage Lodge.
Day 7
Travel by charter flight back to Churchill—another opportunity for great aerial shots. From there, you will have the opportunity to check out the town of Churchill, in the heart of Polar Bear Country. You will have time to visit this unique frontier community on your own. Stops include the Port, the Eskimo Museum and the Polar Bear Holding Compound. Dinner will be provided in a local restaurant before your brief transfer to the airport. From there a commercial flight will deliver you back to Winnipeg for your final night. Accommodations are at the Four Points Sheraton in a Standard Room.
Day 8
After breakfast in the hotel you will walk across the road to the Winnipeg Airport to board your flight on your scheduled departure.
