South Africa Safari
Mention taking a safari in South Africa and everyone has a favourite lodge, camp or safari venue – because in truth there is so much choice. The good news is that there are all kinds of safaris out there – something for every budget and every kind of person (except perhaps those who don’t like animals). Whether you’re a backpacker or an investment banker, there is bound to be an ideal solution. It’s just a matter of knowing what’s available and what the jargon means in real, tangible terms.
And that is where The Independent Traveller can help....
There are many answers to this, but special places that we like to use are LALIBELA in the Eastern Cape and JACI`S SAFARI LODGE in Madikwe. Lalibela Game Reserve and Safari Lodge is located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, close to Port Elizabeth and Addo, which means it is not only malaria free, but spans 5 ecosystems, resulting in a breath-taking diversity of flora and fauna. Jaci`s is located in the magnificent Madikwe Game Reserve which is also malaria free and home to the Big 5.
For the ultimate safari “home from home” – JEMBISA in the breathtakingly beautiful mountains scenery of the Waterberg, is a genuine bush home on its own private game reserve, in the Palala River Reserve. Whatever age, all children love Jembisa, they enjoy a thrilling safari adventure, are educated in some of the wonders of the natural world and leave as mini-game trackers. For families to share this experience is a never-to–be forgotten holiday. At Jembisa family safaris are a specialty and they offer a very wide range of unique activities designed to give a full and rounded depth to the safari.
a safari wedding
Again, there are many – but amongst our special places, we would offer are MAKANYANE – it is ideally situated overlooking the Marico River in a secluded corner of the north-eastern part of the Madikwe Game Reserve. Makanyane is ideally situated for a dramatic, unforgettable ceremony, with stunning views of the surrounding bush. Wedding photographs can be taken around the lodge, in the bush against the backdrop of wide African plains, or in the cool romance of the forest. With just 8 luxury suites, each secluded in the forest on the bank of the river, privacy and exclusivity is assured.
Tintswalu Safari Lodge is located in the heart of Mpumalanga in the Manyeleti Game Reserve, and offers a unique wedding venue that offers guests the opportunity to experience absolute tranquility while enjoying elegant accommodation in style, and the opportunity to spot some wildlife.
Or Kichaka Private Game Lodge - Situated in a private game reserve in the malaria-free Eastern Cape, Kichaka is the perfect place to enjoy a Big Five safari experience in quiet luxury. A wedding in the wilderness at Kichaka is a romantic & hassle-free experience
THE KRUGER AREA
The Kruger is home to the widest diversity of wildlife in South Africa. It also offers the widest choice of accommodation to suit all budgets. From self drive safaris, staying in San parks accommodation to private and exclusive lodges, there is a safari experience to suit all. Some of our favourite places include MOTSWARI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE. One of South Africa’s jewels nestled within the Timbavati Nature Reserve, this family-owned and operated four-star luxury safari lodge prides itself on its warm atmosphere and luxurious accommodation. SABI SABI SELATI CAMP is special in so many ways. It conjures up the Africa of the great safari era, when blazing sunsets melted into lantern lit romance and service was an effortless whisper – and matches with exceptional game viewing.
Safari in KwaZulu Natal
There are some real gems to consider in this culturally rich area. Amongst our favourites are AMAKHOSI SAFARI LODGE where in addition to all exceptional wildlife and bird watching, you can also enjoy and be captivated by Frogging Safaris! Game walks of a quite different kind! From November to March each year, when the rains come, Amakhosi invites guests to discover the fascinating world of amphibians. Night safaris with qualified guides take you deep into the bush to marvel the spectrum of colours and the loud calling of mating frogs. THANDA is also special – for great wildlife – but also for Bysh Walks and photography and its unique calling card is the quirky option of a BEACH PICNIC! Located about 2,5 hours from Thanda by car is 9 Mile Beach – a coastline that invites guests to experience a different kind of African beauty: one where sun, sand and sea combine to create the perfect beach location.
Star Gazing on safari
At Sanbona in the Western Cape. One of the most spectacular wonders to be seen in the Karoo is the night sky and Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is the ideal location to experience it. Free from light pollution, it offers some of the finest stargazing in Southern Africa and is an ideal activity for all guests to enjoy.
OR try sleeping in a 'sleep out under the stars'. Makanyane offers guests the ultimate nocturnal bush experience sleeping out under the stars, where nothing stands in the way of the sights and sounds of the African Bush at night. For a night of your stay at Makanyane, if you are able to forego the luxury of your suite, you have to opportunity to spend a night on our Star View Sleep-out Hide. This incredible experience, offered by only a select few locations in Africa, gives guests the thrilling experience of falling asleep surrounded only by flickering lanterns and listening to a lullaby of roaring lions, crying jackals and laughing hyenas.
