This itinerary will take you from Durban, the gateway to KwaZulu-Natal, through the Valley of a Thousand Hills to the beautiful Natal Midlands, popular for the Midlands Meander tourist route which winds its way between the many scenic spots, craft shops, coffee shops, restaurants, farms and art galleries and then up into the Drakensberg Mountains.
Your first stop for 2 nights is Fordoun Hotel and Spa for a few days of rest, relaxation and treatments to revive mind, body and soul after the long flight. Enjoy long walks, mountain biking, exploring the famous Midlands meander – and maybe even a consultation with their resident African Traditional healer?

Then it’s off to Cathedral Peak Hotel for a few nights – an ideal base from which to explore the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Mountains. The property has an idyllic setting and is great for walking, hiking, horse riding and fishing. Family heaven – but also great for honeymooners or people who enjoy the outdoors!

Next head up to the Battlefields for two nights at the stunningly beautiful Isandlwana Lodge, carved into the mountain overlooking Mount Isandlwana, where you can relive the triumphs and tragedies of the Battles of Rorkes’ Drift and Isandlwana as well as take an authentic Zulu village tour.

Then it is off for 2 nights of beautiful luxury and safari magic at Amakhosi, a 5-star boutique game lodge where you will be treated like royalty whilst searching for the Big 5 and other wildlife. After all the early morning game drives and safari action, a few days of soaking up the scenery from your patio – or on horseback might be in order at the fabulous Pakamisa.
Finish off the trip with 2 nights at Ghost Mountain Inn in Mkuze – a wonderful, family-run property dwarfed by the legendary Ghost Mountain. This great base will allow you to explore the surrounding game reserves of Phongola, Mkhuze and Hluhluwe-Imfolozi either by yourself, or on guided tours, whilst also allowing you to relax around the pool, enjoy some of the best birding the country can offer – or even take a day trip to the beach. Boat cruises can also be enjoyed at nearby lake Jozini where you can spot hippos in the water and The Big 5 on the shores.

This tour encompasses the stunning variety of contrasts and wide diversity of experiences that KwaZulu-Natal offers. The year-round sunshine and warm welcome of its people are just an added bonus!
