The only house available for rent on the banks of the upper Zambezi

Tangala House is a large and unique family home located on the banks of the Zambezi River, 15 km upstream from the magnificent Victoria Falls, with incredible sunsets across the Zambezi and looking onto the Zambezi National Park. Stylishly built and furnished with a recent feature in the UK House and Garden magazine, Tangala sleeps eight and makes an ideal stay for a family holiday, coming fully serviced and staffed by Tongabezi Lodge.

The house is ideal for families and is designed to keep insects out, with glass windows all round. Large herds of elephant often come down to drink on the opposite bank and hippopotamus are regularly seen and heard. There is fantastic birdlife, with over 145 species to date spotted from the kitchen window.

Tangala has four bedrooms, three of which are en suite, a fourth bathroom, a separate loo, a spacious kitchen/dining room, children's playroom, living room opening onto a thatch veranda, a "snuggery" with fireplace and a 12m swimming pool.

The living room has a large sofa and two armchairs and leads onto a ‘snuggery' with satellite TV, video, Hi Fi and jetmaster fireplace.

Most of the rooms have very high thatch ceilings and the passages have large 3-4m high 'Moroccan’ arches, with 1m thick walls.

The kitchen/dining room is huge, 13m x 6m,with the front wall being taken up by a 5mlong window, with a stunning view of the Zambezi. It is well equipped, with fridge and freezer, fan assisted double oven, gas cooker, ceramic double sinks, a separate drinks fridge and a microwave oven. The large dining table seats twelve. Tangala comes with one house assistant , two grounds men and three friendly dogs. The house assistant will help with cooking, housekeeping and laundry.



The master bedroom faces the Zambezi River and has a king size teak bed with sitting area and sofa, bathroom with large double bath set into railway sleepers, and shower. Bedroom II also faces the Zambezi River, and has a queen size four poster iron bed, with a walk-in bath and shower. Bedroom III has a king-size teak bed, with walk in bathroom with large double bath and shower. Bedroom IV has twin beds and a bathroom across the passageway, with cast iron bath.

The swimming pool is 11m x 5m, with an extra shallow area for children and bench seating. In front of the house is a grass lawn, which drops 1m to 20 m of wild riverine grassland and then to the Zambezi River. The house has 250m of private river frontage, with no properties on either side.

The veranda easily seats ten, and is open thatch with steps onto the lawn and towards the swimming pool and the terrace, which has a railway sleeper picnic table seating eight.

Family activities included in the rate at Tongabezi are: sunset/sunrise boat trips, fishing, bird walks, gorge walks, afternoon canoeing, visit to Zambian side of the Falls, visit to Livingstone markets and local Chief's village, game drives in Mosi-Oa-tunya National Park and visit to the museum. All other activities are payable direct.
